Army sergeant accused of videotaping female cadets in shower

By David Alexander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – An Army sergeant at the U.S . Military Academy at West Point has been accused of videotaping female cadets in the shower, a defense official said on Wednesday, the latest in a series of sex-related incidents that has rocked the military.

Sergeant Michael McClendon was charged this month with four violations of U.S . military law: indecent acts, dereliction in the performance of duty, cruelty and maltreatment, and actions prejudicial to good order and discipline, Army spokesman George Wright said.

Wright said McClendon was being investigated for possession of inappropriate images taken without consent .

He did not elaborate.

The New York Times, which initially reported the incident, said the pictures included female cadets in the shower, which a defense official confirmed on condition of anonymity.

The Army has notified those involved and offered support services at their individual locations,” Wright said. “It appears to be at least a dozen or more alleged victims who may have been photographed without their consent.”

McClendon, who had served at the prestigious military academy in New York, since 2009, was transferred to Fort Drum in New York after the charges were filed on May 14, Wright said.

McClendon served as a tactical noncommissioned officer at the academy, a job that put him in charge of mentoring and training a company of about 121 cadets, focusing on leadership development and other responsibilities.

General John Campbell, the Army’s vice chief of staff, said the service moved to address the situation at West Point as soon as the problem was reported.

“Our cadets must be confident that issues such as these are handled quickly and decisively, and that our system will hold those responsible accountable,” he said.

The report of charges against McClendon follows a spate of sex-related incidents that have embarrassed the U.S . military and prompted members of Congress to introduce legislation designed to toughen up the Pentagon’s handling of sex crimes.

A study released by the Defense Department two weeks ago estimated that incidents of unwanted sexual contact in the military, from groping to rape, rose 37 percent in 2012, to about 26,000 cases from 19,000 the previous year.

The report was released just days after Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Krusinski, 41, who led the Air Force sexual assault prevention effort, was charged with sexual battery involving a civilian woman in a parking lot not far from the Pentagon.

Several days later a U.S . Army sergeant who worked as a sexual assault prevention coordinator at Fort Hood, Texas, was accused of pandering, abusive sexual contact and assault.

Lawmakers in the Senate and U.S .

House of Representatives are moving ahead with steps to toughen the military’s response to sex-related crimes and provide better treatment for victims.

Ex-paratrooper charged in sex assault found dead

CHARLESTON, W.VA. An ex-Army paratrooper with a history of mental issues who disappeared while serving home confinement has been found dead, authorities said. Boone County Chief Deputy Chad Barker said Zarcus Gore, 27, of Danville, was dressed in camouflage gear with his face covered in paint when his body was found on mining property near Lick Creek. Barker told The Charleston Daily Mail that a large amount of painkillers was found with the body, which was sent to the state medical examiner to determine a cause of death .

Batteries, food and a handgun also were found. Gore was charged in March with malicious wounding and sexual assault stemming from a January incident . He disappeared following a preliminary hearing on the charges on Thursday .

He was serving home confinement as a condition of the bond he posted for the charges. Barker said Gore took a handgun and money from his uncle s home where he was staying and left . A turkey hunter discovered his body about two and a half miles from the home on Saturday.

Deputies had searched for Gore over the weekend. With his training he was definitely a concern to us, Barker said . We knew he was a dangerous individual.

He stole that firearm for a reason . We didn t know if he was intent on harming himself, or law enforcement or the victim in that assault. The Columbus Dispatch interviewed Gore in 2008 for a story about veterans dealing with wartime experiences .

The Iraq War veteran, who served as a paratrooper for a year in the Army s 82nd Airborne Division, was seeking help for post-traumatic stress disorder at a Veterans Administration hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio. I m trying to get to where I can cope with society, Gore told the Dispatch . I m having a lot of problems dealing with day-to-day life .

I didn t get any physical injuries, but I got a lot of mental ones. Judging by the supplies found with Gore s body, Barker said he looked like he was intent on staying in the woods for a while. Gore had fled the state when he learned of the charges in March .

He was arrested in Chicago on March 22 and extradited to West Virginia. A Danville man claims Gore and another man attacked him on Jan .

23, hitting and kicking him before taking him to Gore s apartment where he was sexually assaulted, according to a complaint filed in Boone County Circuit Court. Barker said Gore also was involved in a drive-by shooting in the late 2000s.

An investigation into his death is ongoing.

Maya Long Count calendar and European calendar linked using …

(Phys.org) The Maya are famous for their complex, intertwined calendric systems, and now one calendar, the Maya Long Count, is empirically calibrated to the modern European calendar, according to an international team of researchers.

“The Long Count calendar fell into disuse before European contact in the Maya area,” said Douglas J . Kennett, professor of environmental archaeology, Penn State. “Methods of tying the Long Count to the modern European calendar used known historical and 1, but when looking at how climate affects the rise and fall of the Maya, I began to question how accurately the two calendars correlated using those methods.”

The researchers found that the new measurements mirrored the most popular method in use, the Goodman-Martinez-Thompson (GMT) correlation, initially put forth by Joseph Goodman in 1905 and subsequently modified by others . In the 1950s scientists tested this correlation using early 2 dating, but the large error range left open the validity of GMT.

“With only a few dissenting voices, the GMT correlation is widely accepted and used, but it must remain provisional without some form of independent corroboration,” the researchers report in today’s (April 11) issue of Scientific Reports.

A combination of high-resolution 3 4 dates and a 5 using tree growth rates showed the GMT correlation is correct.

The Long Count counts days from a mythological starting point .

The date is comprised of five components that combine a multiplier times 144,000 days Bak’tun, 7,200 days K’atun, 360 days Tun, 20 days Winal, and 1 day K’in separated, in standard notation, by dots.

7 want to place the Long Count dates into the European calendar so there is an understanding of when things happened in the Maya world relative to historic events elsewhere. 8 also allows the rich historical record of theMaya to be compared with other sources of environmental, climate and archaeological data calibrated using the European calendar.

The samples came from an elaborately carved wooden lintel or ceiling from a temple in the ancient Maya city of Tikal, Guatemala, that carries a carving and dedication date in the Maya 9 . This same lintel was one of three analyzed in the previous carbon-14 study.

Researchers measured tree growth by tracking annual changes in calcium uptake by the trees, which is greater during the rainy season.

The amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere is incorporated into a tree’s incremental growth . Atmospheric carbon-14 changes through time, and during the Classic Maya period oscillated up and down.

The researchers took four samples from the lintel and used annually fluctuatingcalcium concentrations evident in the incremental growth of the tree to determine the true time distance between each by counting the number of elapsed rainy seasons .

The researchers used this information to fit the four radiocarbon dates to the wiggles in the calibration curve . Wiggle-matching the carbon-14 dates provided a more accurate age for linking the Maya and Long Count dates to the European calendars.

These calculations were further complicated by known differences in the atmospheric radiocarbon content between northern and southern hemisphere.

“The complication is that radiocarbon concentrations differ between the southern and northern hemisphere,” said Kennett. “The Maya area lies on the boundary, and the atmosphere is a mixture of the southern and northern hemispheres that changes seasonally . We had to factor that into the analysis.”

The researchers results mirror the GMT European date correlations indicating that the GMT was on the right track for linking the Long Count and European calendars.

Events recorded in various Maya locations “can now be harmonized with greater assurance to other environmental, climatic and archaeological datasets fromthis and adjacent regions and suggest that climate change played an important role in the development and demise of this complex civilization,” the researchers wrote.
