Cemeteries are quiet windows on the past, and the Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery has had some interesting additions and subtractions since informally established around 1909, and officially dedicated in 1912, when the first grave was filled.
A register kiosk with the name and location of individual plots helps guide visitors to the correct internment location . A documentation of all Army post gravesites with GPS location is scheduled later this year.
Like other Army cemeteries, gravesites are decorated with flags on holidays like Memorial Day, and like all cemeteries, some of the gravesites come with a little mystery . The shape and size of headstones, some more than 100 years old, some with inscriptions in Asian languages, tell part of the post s history.
The first impression while walking the grounds is that as cemeteries go, it s a small, well-maintained military cemetery .
Daily rains and an attentive maintenance crew keep the grounds tidy and reverential.
On the sunny midweek day visited recently, an older civilian worker was spending his lunchtime dozing under a shady patch of trees at the back of the grounds, not far from the remains of Italian prisoners of war and unknowns who aren t thought to be Americans behind a hedge in Plot VIII.
Behind another hedge beyond Plot III, unnoticed if one isn t looking for them, are the remains of seven dishonored American Soldiers executed for capital crimes . Post records indicate two or three of the dishonored were executed in Hawaii, while four had been reinterred here as part of a 1949 Army consolidation project . To add to their eternal shame, the seven are buried facing away from the flag.
There are many children interred, and in the back are seven plots dating back to 1956, which mark the remains of 2,390 fetuses from Tripler Army Medical Center.
Civilian employees, too, found a final resting place on post .
According to the garrison s Casualty and Mortuary Affairs, the first recorded interment was Mr . Harry Holiday, who worked for the quartermaster corps (the unit responsible for early construction at Schofield Barracks.)
Although two major wars and other conflicts in the last century saw an increase in the number of remains, the Schofield Barracks Historic Guide states, The cemetery has been considerably reduced in size since the end of World War II as the result of the removal of many veterans to other locations.
Many of the remains from World War II were relocated to the Punchbowl, the National Cemetery of the Pacific, said Ernestine Pratt, Casualty and Mortuary Affairs.
The cemetery is located on Lyman Road, a little west of Humphries Road, and easy to find with its white, wrought iron gates.

We laughed about the fact that, according to the author, we ve gone all the way to fourth base together, which I guess is to be expected considering the fact that we ve been dating each other for about seven years now.
That post made me think about how I first started dating some of my MilSpouse friends . Just as we all have stories about the beginning dating stages with our spouses, we also have stories of our first dates with friends . So here is my version of dating for MilSpouses:
First Base
First base is a military-related function, either through your servicemember or a service offered through your local installation .
This could an FRG meeting before a deployment . Or a Fourth of July picnic for your spouse s new command . Or a resume writing class at the family support center .
I got to first base with several of my current friends at the two-week indoctrination class we were required to take upon arriving in Japan . There s nothing like bonding over jet lag and culture shock.
First base is always the toughest part of the courting process for me because I m an introvert4 . I m not usually inclined to attend these events voluntarily, and then, if and when I actually show up, I m not the type of person to approach people I don t know, especially if I sense I m an outsider looking in on an already established inner circle .
But I have to remind myself that first base usually ends with the butterflies-in-your-tummy feeling of excitement that accompanies a new relationship and the giddy teenager thoughts that, She could be THE ONE.
Second Base
A MilSpouse friendship hits second base when you schedule an outting that involves either your significant others for a double date or the kids for buffers in case you discover that first base is the best it s ever gonna get.

And instead of the fear of judgment you had at second base, you know you ll get nothing in return but support and encouragement.
I got to third base with another MilSpouse in the bathroom of a restaurant6 . It was a liberating experience.
Fourth Base
By the time you get to fourth base, you can consider yourself surrogate spouses . You ve gone all the way .
She s willing to compromise her health by entering your germ-infested house while you re puking because your husband is gone and you need ginger ale and Saltines . You re willing to watch her kids for three days because she has a business trip and her husband is gone . You have late-night gab sessions and sleepovers because both of your husbands are gone .
You ve killed pain and bottles of wine together . You ve swapped kids at the commissary because you know that s the only way you ll make it to the checkout line with your sanity . You ve been stationed at multiple duty stations together .
Her phone number is listed most frequently in your iPhone s recents list because she s the first person you call to share exciting news and day-to-day snafus .
And your car automatically drives itself to her house even though she PCSed months earlier.
At this point, you ve seriously discussed the merits of moving in together because, although it s too depressing to do the actual math, a rough estimate confirms that you ve likely spent more time with each other than with your real spouses .
And even though this courtship won t end with a big white dress and a ring on your finger, you do end up with something pretty darn special: a true MilSpouse friend.

The Dos And Don'ts Of Dating A Princess | Lottie Nevin
Once upon a time there was a stunningly beautiful Princess called Lara Jonggrang . She was so beautiful and lovely that absolutely everybody wanted to get into her knickers.

The neighbouring kingdom to Boko was Pengging . There were no man-eating giants there, just a wise ruler called King Prabu Damar Moyo and his son, Bandung Bondowoso (cool name eh?) who though not gifted with beauty, had been blessed with pretty awesome super-natural powers.
Greedy, man-eating King Prabu Boko, not content with having Indonesia s most stunning woman as his daughter, a lovely wife and a huge kingdom of loyal subjects to eat and reign over, suddenly decided that he wanted to add Pengging to his empire .
He ordered a huge army to be put together under the charge of another giant Patih Gupolo and launched a surprise attack upon his neighbours . Things did not go entirely to plan . Young Bandung Bondowoso, he of the supernatural powers, slayed the man-eating giant Prabu Boko and sent the enemy army packing .
It was left to the giant Patih Gupolo to lead the defeated army back to Boko Towers and break the bad news to the Queen and Princess.
On hearing the news of her fathers demise, the distraught Princess sobbed into her long tresses, and the Queen fled weeping to her bed in the East Wing . The Princess was still wailing uncontrollably when Bandung Bondowoso and his army rocked up at Boko Palace and took siege . Despite her red puffy eyes and mascara, streaked face, the Prince fell hopelessly in lust with her and asked her to marry him .
I m sure we all agree that the timing was pretty chronic ? First of all they d only just met and secondly he d just killed her dad . Lara was not impressed .
NO ! NO ! NO !
She shrieked at him but the lusty Prince was not going to take Lara s NO ! for an answer . He showered her with gifts of Cadbury s Milk Tray (her favourite) and sent her so many bunches of flowers that Interflora was having a struggle keeping up with the orders .
And if choc and flowers was not suffice to win her over, he had shipped in, straight from Paris, enough bottles of Chanel No .
5 to last her a life-time . Eventually Princess Lara groaning from so much chocolate and feeling sick from the sight and scent of lilies and Chanel no.5 succumbed, but only on the condition that he build her a 1,000 temples overnight . If he could do that, then and only then would she marry him.
This is when having super-natural powers is an absolute Godsend .
As soon as the sun set the Prince and his mighty powers set to work on building the 1,000 temples . But our Princess Lara was a bit of a minx . When word got back to her that Bandung Bondowoso was doing a grand job and had just completed temple no.999 she ordered her subjects to light fires in the east and started grinding up rice .
On seeing the light and the activities of the palace staff, the cockerels believed it was dawn and started crowing .
At once, the spirits of the night vanished and so too the work on the 1,000th temple.
On finding out the truth, Prince Bandung Bondowoso was mightily pissed off .
