Training starts for Gurkha recruits 28.02.12
Competition to serve as a Gurkha in the British Army is fierce. Each year more than 11000 Nepali men apply to join the ranks but only 170 make it through. This year’s recruits have only been in the UK since January but their training has already begun. They must complete a 37 week course, longer than the standard 23 weeks other budding soldiers must go through as it includes extra language tuition. Forces News caught up with them at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick where they are getting their first taste of Army life.

ANA training centre reaches out to women 13.02.12
The main Afghan National Army training centre in Kabul is pushing through fifty thousand recruits a year, in order to meet international targets. Up to eight thousand ANA soldiers are based there at any one time and there is now a drive to recruit and train Afghan women to become Army Officers. The women spend the first ten weeks learning military skills, including counter insurgency. Many of the recruits have not told their families about their new careers, fearing it may put them at risk.
